captioning sponsored by cbs this is the "cbs evening news" reporting live tonight from newtown. >> axelrod: good evening. newtown, connecticut was, by many measures, one of the safest communities in america. it is now the grief-stricken home of the second deadliest school shooting in u.s. history. 28 people are dead, including the shooter. late today, connecticut's chief medical examiner, wayne carver, reported that the autopsies on all the children are now complete. all 20 of them were shot more than once by 20-year-old adam lanza. police have also released the names of those killed, eight boys, 12 girls, between the ages of 6 and 7. all were first graders. six adults at the school were also murdered, and investigators say they now have some very good evidence explaining what wasde . we have a team of cbs news correspondents and producers on this still-developing story. we begin with margaret brennan here in newtown. >> reporter: gflg, jim. and the bodies of those 12 girls, eight boys, and six adult women killed right here in the sandy hook shooting yesterday are being returne

in politics, where emotion will pull the logic train. the emotion of what happened in newtown, connecticut, the emotion contained in a week of funerals, we're at the front of a church or synagogue or a mosque, you're going to be very small -- there are going to be very small caskets. t.j., if we still have the picture of jack pinto buried yesterday in newtown, connecticut, buried in his little league uniform, that right there is what is going to change the dialogue for this. people carry around for years pictures of their children in little league uniforms, hockey uniforms, first and second grade school picture. that's the picture, the emotion that will pull this thing. >> if it doesn't, there's a serious problem. i understand the president does -- has a lot to do, when it comes to making sure that our economy doesn't fall off the cliff. there are tens of millions of working americans that know that the fiscal cliff situation needs to be addressed. isn't human nature funny, though, how we need to get moving on this? >> those critical issues you just mentioned, they seem so insignificant. >

have a newtown, connecticut facility. >> we do. we have about 400 associate there is and it really has been traumatic. last night we had a memorial service, 3,500 local people game from newtown, from danbury. it is a tragedy. many of our associates live in newtown, we have a major facility there and it just shows the fragility of life and i can speak as a parent that if you lose a child, nothing else matters. >> now, if someone wants to help, was there an organization that you would recommend that people help? >> they have set up a special section in the united way in danbury. and if you connect the united way danbury, they have an area where you can send funds and they're doing a lot of good work. >> okay. now your company itself has been pretty socially responsible. an issue that i thought was important is fuel, the footprint that your company has and how important this is to you. zero fuel now you use? >> it really is. it's a remarkable situation that we have, you know, we are an integrated company. we have operations in vermont and vermont can go minus 14 in winter and this year we

and washington working together, negotiating on this bill and what happened in newtown. but in middle america, nothing happens in a bubble. people are still shattered by that. and anybody that is dragging their feet, fighting, seeming petty less than a week after -- i'm sorry, this is the worst tragedy i can think of as far as just shattering the soul of this country. i say since 9/11, in my lifetime. 9/11 and this. then i guess you'd have to go back to kennedy's assassination. i can't believe how shaken -- people are just talking about this all the time. they're looking at washington squabbling over numbers. and since they've already decided on the big issues, they're just thinking, they're so dysfunctional. and whoever gets the blame for this, it's in big trouble politically. >> no question. and it's not just on the fiscal stuff. it's on other things, too. i mean, you know, i thought your incredibly eloquent statement last week reflects what a lot of people feel including a lot of people who have had reservations before about doing something. that fight's just about to begin. the high water

want to express our thoughts and prayers that everyone affected by this terrible tragedy in newtown, connecticut. our words can do little to ease your pain. but you know this. we are with you in this incredible difficult time. and recognize that you are who we are thinking about, even as we try to focus on our work today. so as for the markets, it was another weak day. dow dipped 36 points. s&p gave up .41%. nasdaq declined .70. a lot of that again because of apple. you know the drill as we head into the weekend. i'm not expecting to hear any progress on the fiscal cliff. but you know, i always watch the sunday morning talk shows now very closely and i'm looking for some politicians saying something encouraging. what does encouraging mean? it means a republican uttering the two words tax increase without the word no before it. and the democrats uttering two words, spending cuts, without the word no before them. neither seems to be able to pull off that syntax, though. at this point i think we've got to assume that the washington people, they can't get it together. we've got to gird

being up. all of a sudden then, we had the impacts of sandy, a tragedy up in newtown, connecticut, and just a lot of other factors that just put a damper on the season. >> so, it is fair to say that it started better than it ended now. >> it started better than it ended. there was a lot of excitement around black friday. i mean it was almost like the super bowl. they have all this advertising, drag people out, it's the biggest event of the year come shopping, and then week after that we had the pro bowl. there was no excitement. there was no reason to come out shopping. so big bang, but it kind of waned as we went into the season. >> how much of the season is in the books now? i mean, what's still left to happen? >> there's a couple of big days still coming. i think this weekend is a big weekend as people redeem gift cards, go into the stores, exchange items for what they're looking for. hopefully get that add-on sale and people start to take advantage of the clearance sale, i would say, though, 95% of it is in the books. we've probably got some strong days ahead of us, though, th
